Minneapolis, MN – The Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery, the only residential crisis nursery in Minnesota, is pleased to announce the milestone of reaching their 25th anniversary. Operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to Hennepin County families, their programming and resources has provided crisis counseling to 26,034 families, managed 74,034 crisis calls, sheltered 42,129 children, and provided 52, 576 referrals to assist families that were in crisis. The mission of the Crisis Nursery is to end child abuse and neglect and create strong, healthy families. They offer free, voluntary overnight residential childcare for children newborn through age six. A big differentiator of services offered is in the longer-term support programming that they offer and the 24-hour a day crisis hotline that provides a lifeline for fragile parents. “Nearly 8,000 children were abused and neglected in Minnesota last year. Thirty-four sustained life-threatening injuries and 14 died. Most victims were under age six,” said Mary Pat Lee, Executive Director of the Crisis Nursery. “We provide a critical safety net to help parents who are in the midst of a crisis before a child is harmed. For 25 years our goal has been to provide a safe haven that provides both short and long term solutions for parents in crisis,” concluded Lee. The Crisis Nursery arose from research conducted in 1978 by the United Way. The founding organizers found that overstressed parents had no place to bring their children when they needed a respite from child care, while they resolved a family crisis. The Junior League partnered with community groups to create this first of its kind agency in 1983 to meet this need. Since 1999, the Crisis Nursery has been located in Golden Valley and has 18 beds, an indoor and outdoor play area, medical care facilities, and a cafeteria to serve and care for children. Greater Minneapolis Crisis Nursery is the only residential crisis nursery in Minnesota and one of only 20 in the nation. Its mission is to work with parents in crisis and the community to strengthen families and prevent child abuse and neglect. It offers free, voluntary services to Hennepin County families in crisis with children newborn through age six, including a 24-hour crisis hotline, crisis counseling, 72-hour residential child care, medical care to children staying at the Nursery, referrals, home visits, parent education and parent support groups.
