LARGEST SINGLE HALF MARATHON PRIZE IN US HISTORY ANNOUNCED
$100,000 Awarded To Winner of Any 13.1® Marathon Series Race Who Breaks The World Half Marathon Record
MINNEAPOLIS, MN, 2011 – US Road Sports & Entertainment Group (USRS) announced the largest single half marathon prize in U.S. history. USRS will award $100,000 to the winner of any 13.1Marathon® Series race whose winning time breaks the World Half Marathon Record. Additionally, USRS will award $50,000 to any U.S. citizen who wins any 13.1Marathon® Series race and whose winning time breaks the U.S. Half Marathon Record.
The current half marathon record holders in each category are:
- Men’s World – Zersenay Tadese (58:23)
- Men’s U.S. – Ryan Hall (59:43)
- Women’s World – Lornah Kiplagat (1:06:25)
- Women’s U.S. – Deena Kastor (1:07:34)
“I challenge every runner in the world to break the World Half Marathon Record at one of US Road Sports’ 13.1® Marathon Series races. There is nothing I would enjoy more than handing a $100,000 check to an athlete at one of our races. Bring on the competition,” says US Road Sports & Entertainment Group’s CEO, Steve Obert.
What: Half Marathon and 5K
When: August 21, 2011 Race starts at 7:13 AM. All runners/walkers must finish in 3 ½ hours. Runners can register up until day of the race.
Who: Runners - Parent or guardian of all participants under the age of 14 will be required to sign an additional waiver at packet pick-up.
Prize: Half Marathon: Overall Male: 1st - $13,100; 2nd - $1,000, 3rd - $500
Overall Female: 1st - $13,100; 2nd - $1,000, 3rd - $500
5K: The top 10 finishers that beat the bear (a college kid from Edina in full bear gear/see photo below) that is racing will receive a new pair of Karhu shoes and a ‘I beat the bear’ shirt.
Why: Scenic route also serves as fundraiser for
Team WorldVision. Last year’s inaugural 13.1® Minneapolis took more than 2,500 runners and walkers on a course filled with festivities, beautiful scenery and live entertainment. Kicking off near St. Anthony Main and ending at Nokomis Park they raised over $180,000 last year.
This year their charity focus (teamed again with non-profit WorldVision) focuses on feeding the famine stricken on the horn of Africa. Their goal is to raise $250,000 this year. $50 supplies one person with clean water for life!
Cost: Entry fees August 1-14 are $85.00 for the half marathon and $25.00 for the Karhu 5K.During race week, participants can sign up for the half marathon for $95.00 and $30.00 for the Karhu 5K.
